The Levi Watkins Learning Center (LWLC) at Alabama State University (ASU) serves as a premier research library and a vital living museum dedicated to the civil rights movement in Montgomery. Charged with leading the design and executing a complete “turn-key” build-out, we worked directly with ASU staff to transform their historical vision into an immersive physical environment.
Our team designed multiple high-impact spaces throughout the facility, including a striking information wall in the main lobby, a large display for the campus cafeteria, and two dedicated mini-museum rooms. One room focuses entirely on the legacy of civil rights giant E.D. Nixon, while the other honors the ASU faculty, students, and local individuals who impacted the movement.
To bridge the gap between history and modern learners, we integrated interactive touch technology alongside custom, high-clarity artifact showcases. These elements allow visitors to engage with digitized archives and view rare historical documents safely up close. Ultimately, this dynamic learning center moves history off the pages of a textbook, providing students and visitors with a deeper, more experiential understanding of the fight for equality.
